Diana Barrera Congratulates KHS StudentsKMS LuncheonSuperintendent ReceptionKHS Award

Superintendent Diana Barrera congratulates all of KHS students of their academic accomplishments.

Superintendent Diana Barrera

Hello!  It gives me great pleasure to serve as the Superintendent of Schools for Kenedy ISD.  I bring administrative experience at the Central Office level from two school districts.   In Somerset ISD, I served as Executive Director of Elementary Curriculum, overseeing various grants and programs, and supporting the leadership, curriculum and instruction at the elementary campuses.  I am most proud of my work with the Gifted and Talented program, Bilingual/ESL program and Response to Intervention program,  and working with colleagues to develop processes and procedures to standardize expectations and improve student outcomes.  I had the good fortune to learn from amazing leaders, both formal and informal, and plan to implement this learning with my new family at Kenedy ISD. Before my work at central office, I worked as a campus principal for ten years, an assistant principal for three years, and I spent eleven years teaching elementary students.

I am excited about working with my new Kenedy team to strengthen practices that are already working well, and collaboratively identify practices that need further growth and development.  Collectively, we will create a culture of teamwork, accountability and support.  The idea that we can accomplish more with the help, support and encouragement of others than we can alone is powerful and can be impactful.  Strengthening leadership of self, campus teams and district teams is of prime importance in building a district in which staff want to work and students want to attend. We will work to create our vision, goals and strategic plan during the coming weeks and months as we engage in the strategic planning process.  This work will require the participation of all stakeholders and will create safe spaces for  honest conversations about our current reality and steps to reaching  our desired reality.  This important work will guide the leadership, engage staff, parents and community and most importantly, inspire and motivate students to realize unprecedented individual and collective success.

I am currently working on my dissertation for my PhD in School Improvement from Texas State University and anticipate a May 2019 graduation.  I am married to Michael Ugarte, the Chief Magistrate Judge for Bexar County.  We have four adult children.  Gabriella and Cristina both work in various aspects of the marketing/advertising industry in Austin, Texas.  Marissa and Mason, live and work in San Antonio.  Marissa works at the Bexar County Courthouse and Mason works is a specialized mechanic for Caterpillar Industries.  We spend our spare time enjoying ranch life at properties we own in Bee County, Duval County and Webb County.

I am thrilled to join the Kenedy ISD family!  I look forward to working with the Kenedy community to collectively build the premiere school district that all of our children need and deserve.

Respectfully yours,
Diana Barrera
