Diana Barrera selected as finalist for KISD SuperintendentThe Kenedy ISD Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that we have selected Ms. Diana Barrera as our Finalist for the position of Superintendent. The Board has been planning and working through an extensive search process by retaining the services of Walsh, Gallegos, Trevino, Russo and Kyle for this process, along with Dr. Sharon Doughty who served as our education consultation. We posted the position on TexasISD and TASANet, and received an overwhelming response of 34 applications. Dr. Doughty conducted extensive reference checking on behalf of the Board. The Board reviewed the applications and narrowed them down to three highly qualified individuals, who were interviewed by the full Board over the course of two nights. We were extremely pleased with the quality of all three of the individuals we interviewed; however two persons rose to the top of our list. Last night the Board was unanimous in our selection of Ms. Barrera.

Ms. Barrera comes to us from working as the Executive Director of Elementary Curriculum for
Somerset ISD. The Board members believe that her energy, ideas and passion for educating the
students of Kenedy ISD will help us build on the successes of our District going forward. Ms.
Barrera holds certificates in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Self-Contained,
Bilingual/ESL, Principal, and Superintendent, and has served as a campus administrator for
thirteen years, as well as an administrator at the district level for almost six years. Working at
Somerset ISD, she led the District in administering the following programs: Bilingual/ESL; Gifted
and Talented; Response to Intervention; Accountability and Testing; Two plus One Partnership
with Texas Tech University; Pre-Kindergarten Grant; Focus and Priority Grants. She
collaboratively developed an Assistant Principal Leadership Academy, designed to build capacity
of district leaders. Ms. Barrera also designed a local After School Program that serves students
from grades K-6.

"I am extremely pleased and excited to be the superintendent of Kenedy ISD. I cannot wait to
meet all of the hardworking educators, parents and community members that have energized and
engaged the Kenedy ISD students."

Ms. Barrera has finished coursework toward her PhD from Texas State University and is currently
working on her dissertation. She anticipates a May 2019 graduation, earning a PhD in School
Improvement.

Ms. Barrera cannot be hired as Superintendent until after a 21-day waiting period which is required
by state law, and the Board anticipates officially hiring her on April 30, 2018. At that time, the
Board will host a reception for the community to meet and get to know Ms. Barrera.
