Dear Parents,
I hope you and your family have managed to stay healthy during these difficult days/weeks/months as our country battles this COVID-19 virus.  While I realize there are many questions about the upcoming school year and uncertainty around how we will cope with this virus, please know that we have been hard at work, creating comprehensive plans to educate our children, safely and effectively.   Kenedy ISD is currently anticipating a school start date of August 19, 2020, for students.  Please note, this start date is subject to change based on any new guidance we receive from local, state, and/or federal authorities.
We will offer both in-person learning or at-home learning as options for our students to receive and participate in instruction for the 2020-2021 school year.

Option 1: Full-time “in-person” learning on campuses, with heightened hygiene and disinfection
protocols, as well as a requirement to wear face coverings (e.g. face masks or shields).

Option 2: Full-time remote “virtual” learning, with district-provided technology, and internet
hotspots based on identified need.   The selection of this option will require the following:
*a commitment to this learning option for the entire nine-week grading period

*grading guidelines and expectations that will be the very same for students whether learning in person or at home

*pre-planned times for teacher/student interactions will be scheduled and required

*daily tracking of student engagement and progress will be required

*some classes at KHS may require students to come to campus if the credits they need require in-person learning/testing or are skill-based and require observable progress monitoring to be able to receive credits

*Work assigned each day will require engagement in that specified work on that day, not at the end of the week.  If work is due for students learning in person, the work will also be due for students learning at home.
If they do not turn in specific assignments on that given day, they will be counted absent from school on that day and will be subject to attendance requirements, as is required of all other students.

Let me be very clear that online learning will be vastly different from what students experienced in March, April, and May.  There will be heightened accountability procedures and practices to ensure we can show that students are engaged and making progress in learning that is new.

In order to ensure our at-home learning will be successful and fully aligned with the instruction, students will receive if they select in-person instruction on campus, we recognize that we need to provide families with training and support to assist their children with virtual learning if the at-home learning option is selected.  Within the coming weeks, we will be communicating our plans to deploy the devices and provide training on the use of the devices and learning platforms.

At this time, we are continuing with our approved instructional calendar, with a start date of August 19th. However, based on the recent surge of positive COVID-19 cases in Karnes County and in Texas, there may be a need to shift our start date, and/or shift everyone to the at home learning model.  If for some reason we need to delay our start, we will also need to extend the school year on the back end in order to meet our required minutes and days of instruction. We will continue to keep you abreast of changes to our calendar, if any.

Kenedy ISD has convened a COVID-19 Response Team to work on the logistics for safely opening our schools for the 2020-2021 school year.  We have reviewed and considered plans from multiple districts across Texas before we developed our own.  We will be sharing our plan with all KISD staff at a virtual video chat this week.  Campus principals will get feedback from parents as well.  The plan will be shared with our Board of Trustees at our July 20, 2020 Regular Board Meeting.  We will send it out to our community within the following two days.

As we continue to learn more from TEA regarding public health recommendations and requirements, we will make appropriate changes to our plan and communicate that information to you.  While we cannot predict what lies ahead as this health crisis evolves, we do know that we need the help, support, and cooperation of our staff and community to make this transition back to school as seamless as possible.  We understand that no single action or set of actions will completely eliminate the risk of COVID-19 transmission, by supporting our staff and implementing these coordinated efforts, we can greatly reduce that risk for our students and staff.

Please complete the commitment form (below), selecting your choice of learning options for each student in your household.  Different options may be chosen for each student within a single household.  It is also important to note that families may opt to change their student’s learning option at the end of a nine-week grading period, with appropriate notice.

In order to plan appropriately for the start of our school year, we are asking all families to complete this form by 5:00 pm on August 6th, 2020 so that we can begin to build schedules and plan for your student’s teacher assignment(s).

Sincerely,

Dr. Diana Barrera Ugarte
