Diana Barrera Congratulates KHS StudentsSuperintendent ReceptionKHS Award

Superintendent Diana Barrera congratulates all of KHS students of their academic accomplishments.

Superintendent - Dr. Diana Barrera Ugarte

It gives me great pleasure to serve as the Superintendent of Schools for Kenedy ISD. We are experiencing growth in all areas of our district!  Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to take the state assessment - STAAR this year and did not have the opportunity to show just how much our students grew academically, but we plan to pick up where we left off and continue the growth in student learning and student achievement.  Our students were not the only ones who have grown!  Our administrative, teaching and support staff took advantage of the time we were learning remotely and went to a variety of training sessions to help them meet our students needs even better!  We have had several of our teachers acquire their Google certification over the summer and I'm sure there are more than I even know about!  We will be better prepared to provide online teaching and support for students who will be learning remotely this year.  The construction on the 2017 Bond Package is almost complete! We have brand new flooring, HVAC and fresh paint throughout KES
, giving it a huge facelift!  The parking lot has also been resurfaced and we have added shaded coverings for students to wait to be picked up in the afternoons.  The older wing in the KHS is also being worked on and will get a facelift as well!  Our administration building is getting new HVAC, and improvements throughout the building, to include a new boardroom.  Our stadium parking lot has been repaired, resurfaced and re-striped, ready for the 2020-2021 football season!  We added a new press-box to the stadium and also added additional ADA compliant stadium seating on our visitors side.  Finally, we have added a brand new tennis center, to include a new concession stand and restrooms.  It has been a busy summer at KISD!

Our Kenedy administrative team has been working and planning to strengthen practices that are already working well, and collaboratively identify practices that need further growth and development.  Collectively, we will continue our work to create a culture of teamwork, accountability and support.  The idea that we can accomplish more with the help, support and encouragement of others than we can alone is powerful and can be impactful.

Much has happened since I first arrived at Kenedy ISD!  I finished my dissertation and graduated with my Ph.D. from Texas State University last year!  I am so glad that is behind me!

Our four children are all employed, thankfully!  My two girls lost their jobs as a result of the Covid-19 shutdown, but thankfully, they were able to secure jobs that challenge and fulfill them.  Michael's son lives and works in San Antonio, and his daughter lives and works in Dallas.  We became proud grandparents to Jack Michals and Ripley Ugarte!  As you can imagine, these two little humans bring such joy into our lives!  We love being members of the grandparent club!

I have also started painting since graduating from Texas State University. I'm enjoying being creative and doing something constructive with my time off.  My husband and I also enjoy spending time at the ranch.  He loves getting on that tractor, and I love getting on that ATV!

It's a new day and a new way in Kenedy ISD for the 2020-2021 school year.  We will do all that we can to keep our students and staff #KenedyHealthy, #Kenedy Safe, and #KenedyStrong!

Warm regards,

Dr. Barrera Ugarte
