(Download Statement Here)

Dear KISD Parents,

     In keeping with Kenedy ISD’s practices to respond to COVID-19, we are notifying all student families that a staff member who was lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 was present on October 16, 2020 at Kenedy Middle/High School and had prolonged exposure with staff.  Due to privacy requirements, we will not be releasing the name of the individual or details that may identify him or her. To ensure the safety of our students and staff, the campuses will be disinfected before students and staff arrive tomorrow morning.  All face-to-face learners will continue to come to our campuses and virtual learners will continue to work remotely. Kenedy Elementary school will operate with their normal schedule while Kenedy Middle and High School will implement a revised, shortened schedule. More information is provided about that modified schedule listed in this statement.

      The local health department has been notified and we are conducting contact tracing and will notify any individuals determined to be in close contact with the infected individual. If we believe anyone has had prolonged exposure with this staff member, and until further guidance from the health department,  we are asking them to self quarantine for 14 days to ensure they do not have the virus, so that there will not be any further spread. Based on the information that we have gathered, it has been determined that the end of the 14-day incubation period for anyone possibly exposed on campus to the staff member is November 2, 2020.

     Since we have a number of staff members who had prolonged exposure to the person who recently tested positive for Covid-19, they will be self-quarantining at home and students at KMS and KHS will have a shortened schedule until November 2, 2020.  The school building will be open for students at 7:30, and classes begin at 8:00, as usual.  Students will have a special schedule to attend core classes and school will be dismissed at 12:30.  We will have a bus run at that time.

     As required by TEA, the school building will  remain open for the duration of the normal school day for any/all students/parents who need/want children to stay at school until the end of the day.  The buses will run, as usual, at 3:30 for students who remain at school for the duration of the school day.

     We ask that you continue to practice social distancing, frequent hand-washing and mask wearing.  Please be aware that any of the following symptoms may indicate a possible COVID-19 infection:

o Sore throat

Temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth;

o New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (or, for students with a chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline);

o Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; or

o New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever.

If your child does begin experiencing any of these symptoms in a way that is not typical, we encourage you to contact your physician. We require anyone in the Kenedy ISD community who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 to please notify our school by contacting their campus principal.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me via email at dbarrera@kenedyisd.comWe  will  continue to monitor this situation and will provide additional information as needed. We are prepared to do whatever it takes to keep our KISD family #KenedySafe and #KenedyStrong.
